James E. McDonald was a physicist from the University of Arizona who began studying the strange phenomenon happening in the Earth's atmosphere in the 1950s and 1960s. As early as 1952, McDonald began searching for supporting evidence that the Earth was being invaded by aliens from another planet. According to McDonald, these other-worldly beings were harmless but could be studied through the unusual phenomenon in the Earth's atmosphere.

When Wiliam Branham mentioned the “scientist” who examined the mysterious cloud formation that occurred over Northern Arizona, it was McDonald that he was referring to. Branham never named McDonald in his sermons, however, and listeners were largely unaware that Branham’s “scientist” was a UFO chaser.

James McDonald's fame quickly began to spread after his initial report of the cloud was published in science magazines in 1963. He was called to speak concerning alien life invading planet Earth at several conferences. In fact, his research data was so popular that it began to worry government officials that the unexplained sightings were an alien invasion. McDonald was called to speak at the United Nations.

When the United States Air Force made public the fact that it had been testing the missile defense system, including launch dates, McDonald abandoned research of this particular cloud: It had changed from “unidentified” to “identified”.
