This video articulates the gist of the following: Etizolam is a thienodiazepine which is chemically related to a class of substances known as benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines produce central nervous system (CNS) depression and are commonly used to treat insomnia and anxiety. Etizolam is a thienodiazepine derivative which is a benzodiazepine analog. The etizolam molecule differs from a benzodiazepine in that the benzene ring has been replaced by a thiophene ring and triazole ring has been fused, making the drug a thienotriazolodiazepine. Etizolam is currently a prescription medication in Japan, India and Italy but has recently emerged on the illicit drug market in Europe and the United States. Etizolam is usually encountered in powder form or in tablet form. Etizolam has also been encountered spiked onto blotter paper. Etizolam is a benzodiazepine analogue from a class of drugs known as thienodiazepines and, like most drugs similar to benzodiazepines, it has amnesic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, hypnotic, sedative and muscle-relaxing properties. It’s most closely related to the benzodiazepine triazolam. Etizolam is mainly used for its anxiolytic and sedative properties, a medicine in Japan, Italy and India, but it’s also used or as an intoxicant. Etizolam does not currently have an accepted medical use in the United States. Etizolam has sedative effects and is a muscle relaxant. It interacts with a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system that controls the firing of neurons. As a result, it is a depressant drug that slows everything down.
