George Washington, the Hebrew congregation, and the religious test for participation in the Republic

George Washington once spoke to a congregation of Jews in America to assert that they had a place in the new Republic, as surely as anyone else.

While a majority of Presidents have been one particular flavor of Christian, we've had the odd exception along the way, largely as a matter of culture and tradition. As of 2021 we even have as many as *two* Catholics in the mix.

Will this always be the case?
