🧠Resetting the brain? how psilocybin is being used to treat severe depression

🧠A new study has found that psilocybin, a serotonin agonist, can effectively treat patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) when combined with psychological support.
🔹Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), researchers measured cerebral blood flow and blood oxygen-level dependent resting-state functional connectivity before and after treatment with psilocybin. Data was collected from 16 of 19 patients, and all 19 reported decreased depressive symptoms one week after treatment. At the five-week mark, 47% of patients met criteria for response to the treatment.
🔸The study also revealed decreased blood flow in the temporal cortex, including the amygdala, which correlated with reduced depressive symptoms. Increased functional connectivity within the default-mode network was also observed post-treatment, and was predictive of treatment response. These findings provide insight into the mechanisms behind the effectiveness of psilocybin in treating TRD and suggest a possible "reset" therapeutic mechanism.
