Lightning and thunder are phenomena that have always occurred on our planet and that were formerly associated with the actions of gods, such as Zeus, for the Greeks, and Thor, for Norse mythology. See what are the physical processes involved in the formation of these phenomena: Rays The rays are formed from the electrification of very high clouds, which hover about 4 km from the ground and are up to 12 km thick. The intense movement of air masses inside the clouds generates friction between water and ice molecules, causing the electrification of the cloud, which will have separate electrical charges so that its base and top will have electrical charges of opposite signs.
