Autumn Cricket

This is a ghost story suitable for Christmas, although it is set in Autumn, when the cricket season is over.
You do not have to like or know anything about cricket, to appreciate this lovely story.
As a feminist, I have illustrated the story from Modger's wife's angle. It was written at a time when (male) middle-class busybodies could influence the local Doctors (who they probably knew from their Mason's meetings) to try and lock up an old fellow in a lunatic asylum, for something trivial, which they deemed to be against Health & Safety. Especially if, as here, the poor people, whose lives they were playing with, lived in some kind of tied cottage on one of their estates.
I imagined the feelings of the old couple, threatened with being forcibly separated, for the first time in their long marriage.
I am sure Dunsany was also criticising this attitude towards the Modgers.
