How to master your emotions…
1. Deal with hyperarousal:
If you are constantly in survival mode you are by definition in reaction to the environment around you which makes it quite difficult to regulate your emotions.
Try to deliberately take slow deep breaths throughout the day especially when you are in a state of stress or accessing painful emotions.
2. Nourish your gut:
More than 90 percent of serotonin receptors are found in your gut meaning if your gut is out of balance then your emotions will also be out of balance.
Aim to eat a diet high in non-starchy vegetables and rich in foods that contain probiotics like yogurt, sauerkraut and kombucha.
3. Consciously process your emotions:
When we pay focused attention to our bodily sensations, we can recognise the ebb and flow of our emotions and with that increase our control over them.
Use language like: “notice that” or “what happens next” when feeling your emotions.
Be gentle with yourself though and don’t force yourself to sit with something that is too painful.
