It seems that there is a trend nowadays of whitewashing history. Suddenly the dark ages were not so brutal after all, instead it actually was a quite pleasant time. Or the germanic invaders, who caused the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, were actually really friendly guys, they just were poor, innocent refugees, who peacefully settled on the Lands of the Western Roman Empire. Well, unfortunately, the archeological evidence of giant, brutal battles between the Romans and the germanic invaders, as well as the contemporary sources, do not confirm that rosy picture, in fact in many cases, the opposite seems to have been the case. Countless cities in Gaul and Spain were brutally sacked, many Romans led into captivity, and many killed. The Vandals were especially brutal in their conquest of Africa, as attested by contemporary historians. The narrative of a peaceful settlement of the Germanic invaders on roman land tells us more about modern ideological trends and our wish that all refugees are per definition super friendly, than it does tell us about what actually transpired in these dark times.
