The Block Plane is probably the handiest woodworking Plane in the workshop, it is capable of both big and small jobs and its size makes it an essential all-time workbench tool; Block Planes come in 2 basic models, inexpensive, lighter weight for more transportable carrying by carpenters, on on-site workers, OR there are the much more robust and heavier block planes that boast more controls for fine-tuning of the blade and heavier frames for smoother more sustained use; Block Planes can do quick work of smoothing saw, jointer and planer marks, trim down thicker wooden parts and make joinery easier by allowing small amounts of wood to be shared off and all this at in a somewhat healthier atmosphere because planes don't create wood dust that can be inhaled, but more often create heavier shavings and chips' Block Planes and a true woodworkers go-to tool.
