More often than not, what we consider normal is nothing more than a conformed understanding of our surroundings. We generally believe in our religion because we happened to have been born in it. We find our traditions engaging because we have seen our peers enjoy them. The Marxist concept of “ideology” is a set of dominant ideas in societies because of an inherently conformist tendency towards culture instead of its perceived usefulness. Many people – like Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell – have argued that this tendency to trust our surroundings instead of questioning it forms our understanding of “normal” and “weird.” If one looks at things from afar, everything is weird to some extent.
