The King Michael I Park or Herăstrău Park is considered the most spectacular and the most varied park in Bucharest.

The park was built by removing the marshy area around Herăstrău Lake, and the architect who expanded this project was Nicolae Caranfil. In order to arrange the park, between 1936 and 1939, the architects Ernest Pinard, Friedrich Rebhuhn and Octav Doicescu joined. Few know that the name “Herăstrău” comes from a sawmill, a mechanical saw, which was located on the lake, near the bridge. From the historical documents, the sawmill was located on DN1 area, being a famous object in the 1600’s, having even streets named after it (Ulita Fierastraului).

With an area of ​​about 200 ha (the largest park located in the north of the city of Bucharest) this is the perfect place for lovers of outdoor sports, long walks on the water’s edge (the alley that surrounds the Lake has a length of approximately 5.92 km), or even water sports. The park also offers the possibility of boats rides, also hydrobicycles, the surface of Lake Herăstrău being about 74 ha. There are areas specially designed for skaters, a bicycle rental center, and an adventure park with various routes. And, let’s not forget the green areas, where we meet an impressive flora: linden trees, maples, poplars, willows, ash trees, but also the colorful areas such as the Japanese Garden, designed by the architect Rebhun, with openings to the Village Museum and park, Roses Island or the ExpoFlora area, where, every year, flower decorations are made on an area of ​​almost 15 hectares!
