Armed man shot by OKCPD officers when he pointed a gun at officers and at a person
Oklahoma City police released more details about a recent officer-involved shooting on Thursday.
The incident happened around 10 a.m. on December 8 near NW 3rd Street and North Pennsylvania Avenue.
Capt. Valerie Littlejohn said a uniformed officer working an off-duty job was flagged down by a citizen who said someone had pointed a gun at him.
Littlejohn said the citizen pointed out the armed man, who was later identified as 31-year-old Reginald Davis.
The off-duty officer called for assistance from other officers. Littlejohn said Davis fired a shot while the officer was waiting for backup to arrive.
Davis then walked to a business parking lot near NW 3rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, with the off-duty officer following on foot.
Littlejohn said officers Davis spent several minutes trying to de-escalate the situation. She said Davis didn't respond to commands to drop a pistol in his hoodie pocket.
"Davis shouted obscenities at the officers during the de-escalation attempts and repeatedly made references that he wasn't going back to prison," Littlejohn said.
Littlejohn said officers initially used a non-lethal beanbag shotgun at Davis.
"When Davis was struck by the beanbag, he grabbed his pistol, raised it, and pointed it at numerous officers," Littlejohn said.
At that point, several officers discharged their firearms, striking Davis. He was taken into custody shortly after.
Littlejohn said Davis was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated for gunshot wounds.
While being treated, Littlejohn said Davis tried to escape from officers by running out of the hospital, but was taken into custody a short time later.
Davis was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on two counts of pointing a firearm, discharging a firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and attempting to escape custody.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The four officers who fired their guns, Sgt. Greg Kennedy, Sgt. George Anderson, Sgt. Alex Beloncik, and Officer Dean Henderson, were placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Littlejohn said the investigation is in the early stages and will take time to complete.
