[Feb 2020] Gates | Gene-editing Mosquitoes

"The most exciting tool for our malaria research is gene editing."
Instead of editing human genetics, we use CRISPR to create what is called gene drives; which is a gene that is inherited by all the offspring. If one of the two parents has this mechanism, then all of the offspring with "a" parent have it as well.

We're working on genes that either reduce mosquito populations or eliminate the inoculating mosquitoes. If you can change their gut structure a little bit, then that parasite will not be able to burrow their stomach back to the salivary gland, which is part of how that cycle of infection is completed.

(2014) Wow, you need to carefully read the wording on this article on Gates' website. Unreal.
