It is commonly taught in school that Rome fell in 476 AD. This is wrong. The last legitimate Western Roman Emperor actually lived until 480, and then the city of Rome itsel continued unchanged from this event, and so did all Roman institutions. Only the Gothic wars some 60 years later actually ended the glory of Rome and destroyed most roman institutions and infrastructure of Italy. But even then Rome didn't end, because the Eastern Roman Empire continued for almost another 1000 years, and this empire, better known as the Byzantine empire, was actually the legitimate continuation of the Roman Empire. We can thus see, that saying Rome ended in 476 is a gross oversimplification, and in fact, the Roman way of life continued for 60 more years in the West, and for 1000 more years in the East.
