Dec. 23, 1962 - A 24-yard field goal by rookie Tom Brooker (#81) in the second overtime period brought the Dallas Texans a 20-17 victory over the Houston Oilers in the American Football League championship game today. Houston, league champions for the first two years of AFL history, came back from a 17-0 deficit to tie the game and send it into sudden death overtime. The only other overtime game in professional history involved the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants in the NFL championship game in 1958, with the Colts winning, 23-17. Both quarterbacks today — Len Dawson for Dallas and George Blanda for Houston — were outstanding. In the first overtime period, Dallas used pass interceptions by Johnny Robinson and Bill Hull to stop Houston drives. Dallas moved to the Houston 38 after Robinson’s interception, but the Houston defense swarmed Dawson and forced the Texans to kick from their 49. However, Hull intercepted a Blanda pass to end the first overtime with Dallas at the Oilers’ 48. In the second overtime, Jack Spikes picked up 10 yards on a pass reception and 19 yards on a rush. After the Texans ran a couple of plays to position the ball, Brooker came in on fourth down and kicked a 25-yard field goal to end the game.
