A BBC Radio adaptation by Alan Dowber of the novel by Ellis Peters.

It is 1138, and the civil war for the throne of England has come to Shrewsbury, with King Stephen besieging the castle held by the Empress Maud's adherents. The castle finally falls, and Stephen orders all prisoners taken to be summarily hanged. Brother Cadfael, herbalist and chief garden-keeper of the Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul in Shrewsbury, is put in charge of preparing the dead for burial; he has been told that 94 prisoners were executed, but his count reveals 95.dead men... and the extra dead man was NOT hanged like the others. The question now is: who is the extra dead man, why was he murdered and who killed him and put him among the executed?

Not only does Cadfael have to uncover the who-what-and-wherefore of this crime, but he must also protect a young noblewoman, the daughter of one of the King's sworn enemies who had escaped the castle's fall, who has been placed in hiding at the Abbey disguised as a boy (and who has become Cadfael's apprentice) and contend with a worthy opponent: Hugh Beringer, the girl's former betrothed, who on the orders of the King is searching for the girl...and who becomes strangely involved with the mystery of the murdered extra man.
