It is December 1138. In the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul in Shrewsbury, Abbot Heribert has been relieved of his position and duties and summoned to London, leaving his ambitious subordinate Prior Robert in charge...something most of the brothers are not too happy about.

At the same time, Gervaise Bonel, his family and household have moved into a house owned by the Abbey as part of a deal in which Bonel gave to the Abbey his lands and manor in return for food, clothing and lodging for life...but his household is no more at peace that the Abbey community.

When Bonel is suddenly taken sick, Brother Cadfael, the Abbey herbalist and garden-keeper, is summoned to attend him...and finds that Bonel has died, murdered by poison...a poison prepared by Cadfael himself as a medicinal oil for aching joints. Not only that, but Cadfael finds that Bonel's widow is the woman he was once affianced to forty years ago, and her son Edwin has become the main suspect in his step-father's murder and is now being hunted by the Sheriff's men.
