Snakes prefer live prey because they get much more nutrients from live animals than from dead ones. They also eat the eggs of birds, fish, and even snakes and other reptiles because the eggs are full of the proteins and nutrients they need and are easy targets for them.
Snakes eat a lot of small and medium-sized prey, such as:
mice and rats, various other rodents such as rabbits and chipmunks, birds, frogs, toads, fish, invertebrates such as earthworms, mollusks and other snakes, especially babies and juveniles, bats, lizards and eggs of various kinds of mammals, birds and reptiles.
