The Milgram experiment was a series of social psychology experiments conducted by Stanley Milgram in the 1960s. The experiments were designed to study obedience to authority and the willingness of individuals to follow orders, even if those orders involved causing harm to others.

In the experiment, subjects were told to administer increasingly strong electric shocks to a "learner" (who was actually an actor) whenever the learner gave an incorrect answer on a memory test. The subjects were led to believe that the shocks were real and that they were causing pain to the learner.

The results of the experiment were disturbing: a large majority of subjects were willing to administer what they believed to be potentially lethal shocks to the learner, simply because they were told to do so by an authority figure.
