NYT Crossword: Comms Galore?

The NYT Sunday crossword for 12/18/22 (the eve of Hanukkah) has gotten national notice for the layout's similarity to a divisive political symbol. Alternate media reports the crossword seems to be "loaded with comms" so it seemed only fair to ask the Universe for further insights and information about that question.
