The white stripes on tank barrels are called "Kill rings." They were first used by the German Army during World War Two to signify the number of enemy vehicles destroyed. Traditionally, each destroyed vehicle got one strip, and ten vehicles got a large stripe.
This tradition was also displayed in the Novel "Team Yankee" by Harold Coyle.
