What does 'homesteader' mean?
homesteader. / (ˈhəʊmˌstɛdə) / noun. a person owning a homestead. US and Canadian a person who acquires or possesses land under a homestead law.
But the people who never made it through grade school would eventually adopt the word and redefine it as an umbrella term for what they consider to be "self-sufficiency" with backyard gardening and a couple of chickens.

But in the middle 1800s, the word homesteading was synonymous with The Homesteading Act of 1862, which provided public land grants of 160 acres to any adult citizen who paid a small registration fee and agreed to live on the land continuously for 5 years, after which they would be granted a deed to the land.

Many homesteaders could not handle the hardships of frontier life and gave up before five years. If a homesteader quit, his or her land reverted back to the government and was offered to the public again. Ultimately, these lands often ended up as government property or in the hands of land speculators. Only about 10% of all homesteaders actually made it the 5 years needed to actually claim their land as their own.

Today a large portion of lost homestead land has been converted into U.S. National Park land and when the government reclaimed the properties they often left the homes, equipment and even graves of the homesteaders to be taken over by nature. And if you happen to come across one of these plots in the wilderness they could take you on the adventure of a lifetime.
