What are expiry dates?
Types of expiry dates.
Section Expiry dates are dates that are used to indicate when a product is no longer fresh or safe to consume. There are two main types of expiry dates: “use by” dates and “best before” dates.
1 “Use by” dates are intended to indicate when a product is no longer safe to consume. This is usually due to the product becoming spoiled or contaminated.
2 “Best before” dates, on the other hand, are intended to indicate when a product is no longer at its peak quality. The product is still safe to consume after this date, but it may not taste as good or have the same nutritional value.
How to understand expiry dates.
Labelling requirements.
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that all food products have an expiration date. This date must be clearly labelled on the product, so that consumers can make an informed decision about whether to buy or consume the product.
The FDA also requires that food manufacturers include a “use by” date on perishable foods. This date indicates when the food is no longer safe to eat.
To help consumers understand these dates, the FDA has developed a standard format for labeling expiration dates on food products. The format includes the following information:
The words “use by” followed by a date;
The phrase “packaged on” followed by a date; or
The words “sell by” followed by a date.
For example, a food product that is labeled “use by” followed by the date “12/21/2018” would be safe to consume until December 21, 2018. After that date, the food may no longer be safe to eat.

Storage tips.
Section One way to extend the shelf-life of your food is to store it in an airtight container. This will help to prevent spoilage by keeping oxygen out, which can cause food to go bad. Another way to keep your food fresh is by storing it in a cool, dark place; this will help slow down the growth of bacteria. You can also freeze food to make it last longer; however, frozen foods should be thawed and cooked properly before eating.
Meal Planning
1 Planning ahead can help you use up products before they expire. Try to create a meal plan for the week, and make sure to include ingredients that are close to their expiration date. You can also look up recipes that use specific ingredients you need to use up.
