Christmas dinners around the world!
Traditional Christmas dinner:
Turkey is certainly the most traditional dish, having been used since the 16th century in Europe, but traditions vary from place to place: there are countries with vegetarian menus, outdoor barbecues, an increase in local recipes and even one with some very bizarre foods…
Check out our selection of countries and the dishes that cannot be missing from your Christmas dinners.
Christmas dinners around the world – Christmas dinners in Europe:
England:
In addition to the traditional Christmas turkey, Christmas pudding is also one of the mainstays on English tables, and is also typical in Ireland. Coins and jewels are hidden inside the pudding and those who find the object can make wishes. Supper is served with rum and brandy.
Spain:
Spanish Christmas dishes include shellfish, fish, meat, sausages, Christmas cakes, nougat, marzipan (in various formats) and biscuits. The meal ends with a toast of cider or sparkling wine.
Portugal:
Christmas Eve codfish (with boiled potatoes, eggs and cabbage) is one of the most traditional dishes, in addition to roast turkey and octopus. Not to mention the french toast, which we Brazilians also like so much.
France:
In French suppers, oysters, smoked salmon, foie gras, roast turkey or lamb and a wide variety of cheeses are served. Also, the bûche de noël (Christmas log) cannot be missing, a chocolate roulade decorated like a log, and a good wine.
Germany:
It is tradition to serve pork, goose, venison and wild boar meat, as well as sausages such as chorizo and sausages. They also serve vegetable soup and, as side dishes, dishes with potatoes, cabbage, carrots, celery and pickles. For dessert, stollen, a sugar-coated dried fruit bread, is a must. The drink that accompanies supper is a warm wine called glühwein.
Italy:
Each region has its recipes and specialties, but there are common dishes across the country. It is customary to serve cappelletti soup or other types of stuffed pasta, as well as lamb and eggplant parmigiana. Seafood such as squid, octopus, cod and anchovies are also on the menu. Sweets include pandoro, panettone and nougat. To accompany, drink wine.

Christmas dinners around the world – Christmas dinners in the Americas!
Argentina:
Christmas picnics and barbecues are not uncommon in Argentina, often including vitel toné (veal coated in tuna sauce), roast turkey and pork, stuffed tomatoes, flan and panettone.
Colombia:
Some of Colombia's most popular foods for Christmas dinner are natilla, a type of flan made from milk and cinnamon, served with buñuelos, fried (but sweet) cheese balls.
Mexico:
The Mexican Christmas dinner consists of codfish, turkey stuffed with almonds, apple puree, pozole (a meat, corn and vegetable soup) and ham. The toast is made with sweet punch, based on fruits and spices.
U.S:
Customs are different in each state, in part due to differences in climate. In general, they serve some roast meat (turkey, goose, duck or pork), accompanied by cranberry sauce. Desserts include Christmas pudding, minced pies (pies filled with dried fruit) and pumpkin pie. Eggnog, a kind of eggnog, is a traditional American Christmas drink and some people prefer the alcoholic version to toast at supper.
Canada:
Traditional Canadian Christmas foods, in addition to roast turkey, are tourtière (a meat pie more characteristic of Québec), stuffing (bread crumb), butter tarts (butter and sugar tarts), nanaino bars (a typical dessert from country), pumpkin pie and gingerbread house (gingerbread houses), which also serve as decoration. Eggnog is also quite traditional at Canadian Christmas.
Christmas dinners around the world – Christmas dinners in Africa!
South Africa:
Supper is celebrated by the sea or outdoors and consists of turkey or duck, chicken, yellow rice, roast beef and, for dessert, the traditional Malva pudding (a creamy apricot jam cake with caramel and vanilla sauce). .
Ethiopia:
A spicy stew of chicken and hard-boiled eggs, called doro wat, is usually served at Christmas, along with injeras (large crepes of fermented flour that people cut off pieces and use to pick up food).
Christmas dinners in Oceania and Asia!
Australia:
Due to the high summer temperatures, Christmas is celebrated on the beach or outdoors, with shrimp, meat or fish barbecues. For dessert there is plum pudding.
New Zealand:
The tradition is to serve sheep and pork meat or ham. The famous pavlova and fruit pudding with brandy are also confirmed.
Fiji:
Stuffed chicken, pork and fish wrapped in banana leaves, baked in an improvised oven on the ground (called lovo), are the most traditional dishes at supper.

The concept of Christmas in Japan is very different from the West, having much more commercial value than religious. Japanese families usually celebrate the date with KFC fried chicken and strawberry cream cake.
