14 Days in the Wilderness | Solo Backpacking Catch and Cook Fish
THIS FUN SOLO CATCH 'N COOK ADVENTURE TOOK PLACE OVER 14 DAYS AT 5 WILDERNESS LAKES. TO REACH EACH LAKE REQUIRED EXTREME BACKPACKING AND EXPLORING IN THE FOREST. THE FISHING WAS AMAZING, CATCHING 100 FISH!
The first day of this backpack hiking trip was nice, the hike, camping spot & weather. The only exception was a big pile of grizzly bear scats nearby.
Up early to climb a pass, gaining 1950 feet in just 4 miles. It was quite the grind, but the views were incredible. Then five more miles to a beautiful high mountain lake. This camp site was the best, a place to pitch the tent and eat a well deserved dinner. I retired early, due to exhaustion, only to be startled awake at 11 p.m. by two bull elk bugling at each other, but other than that I slept solid.
Today was full of fishing. I excitedly angled and was delighted to hook 21 gorgeous little yellowstone cutthroat trout, in the 10 to 12 inch range. I kept 3 for my five star supper.
Up with the sun, through the woods where I discovered my next destination, an old outfitters camp, next to an awesome lake. Here I fished with a fly, then lures, catching yellowstone and snake river cuts. These were bigger, 13 to 17 inches. I enjoyed a fillet or two, cooking some over a campfire.
I wanted to explore more in these mountains and find another lake with even bigger cutthroats. So I did, hiking through a pastoral meadow, with a meandering creek, & arriving at a coveted lake. The fishing here was amazing, huge cuts. Here I caught the biggest fatty of the excursion, a three pound, 20 inch cutbow, a rainbow cutthroat hybrid. Wow, what a cool experience! At this lake I land a total of 19 & release all but two, of which I deep fry and have delicious fish & chips.
Now off to discover another lucky lake. I had great success, a remote one with a stunning view! The catching here was not as prolific, but I did land five including a monster cutbow, it was a fat beauty and 18 inches long! I kept one cut & made fried nuggets to savor while gazing at the impressive scenery.
The next morning I made my way to the last alpine spot to be fished. I caught three small brook trout and enjoyed eating 'em.
The final night had an overnight low of 28 degrees, burr! In the morning I hiked to the trailhead passing a magnificent moose and some enormous wolf & mountain lion tracks.
These were some righteous adventures, rock on!
