Schools Are Being Used as Front Lines in Conflict.

The nation as a whole has recently seen an increase in book bans. Contrary to appearances, there is no grassroots movement of genuinely concerned parents supporting the efforts. The plan to ban books is being promoted by wealthy far-right organizations that often have political or religious motivations. "Schools are being converted into battlegrounds," claims Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America, "where individuals are watching instructors, staking out legal boundaries, and it all distracts from teaching & learning." It has also been "very unsettling," says Dr. Christopher Rhodes of Harvard and Boston Universities, to see these organizations advance the book-banning agenda.
