Elderberry: The Cold and Flu Companion

Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has traditionally been used to treat cold and flu symptoms. Elderberries contain a variety of flavones, isoflavones, flavanols, anthocyanins, phenolic acids, lectins, and many vitamins. The active chemicals include anthocyanins.

These immune-boosting compounds are antiviral, antibacterial, anti-diabetic, antitumor, antioxidant and antidepressant.

The antiviral properties include activity against coronaviruses and influenza viruses. The active compounds attach to H1N1 cells and stop them from entering our cells.

Elderberry juice blocks influenza and viral proteins and triggers our body's immune response. Studies have shown that elderberries decreases respiratory symptoms and decreases duration of viral infection.

Use elderberries with caution if you have autoimmune disease, your gut health is not optimized, the syrup contains honey (should be avoided with babies) or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (ask your doctor). Don’t consume green, unripe, uncooked elderberries as they contain toxins and can be poisonous. Always consult with your healthcare provider before taking supplements.
