There were many good roman emperors, and of course we immediately think of Marcus Aurelius, or Trajan or Augustus, or the others of the five good emperors of the 2nd century. While these were all indeed great emperors, I have a personal favorite, because without him, the Roman Empire might have fallen already in the 3rd century AD. I am talking about Aurelian. During those days, there was constant civil war and barbarian invasions threatened the Empire on every front. Aurelian defeated the Alemanni, the Goths, the Vandals, the Juthungi, the Sarmatians and the Carpi and thus secured the borders of the empire. He reconquered the splitaway Palmyrene empire in 273, and then he reconquered the splitaway Gallic Empire in 274. He also was responsible for building the giant walls of Rome, that still stand in parts to this day, and he introduced a monetary reform in order to stop the devaluation of the roman currency, which had created huge economic problems. Thus, at least for me, he is the best emperor because he saved the Roman Empire from a premature collapse.
