Trauma bonding is a term first used by Patrick Carnes to describe an emotional but dysfunctional attachment that occurs in the presence of danger, shame or exploitation. It is a form of psychological and emotional abuse that normally occurs in toxic, coercive relationships through a pattern of both positive and negative reinforcement.
Previously thought of as Stockholm Syndrome, in this video Darren Magee outlines the concept of trauma bonding and looks at six common signs of being in a trauma bonded relationship.
