Mata illegally arrested

Ex cop Dean's attorney inquired around 11am if a Manuel Mata was in the courtroom, then around 2:30pm the same attorney informed the court that Mata had made an appearance. THE QUESTION IS WHY WOULD A DEFENSE ATTORNEY WANT TO CALL A KNOWN COPWATCHER AS A CHARACTER WITNESS?
