From November to February in the Amazon an extremely common tree rains down mama from heaven in the form of “ice cream beans,” or “guaba.” The trees up to 4 ft seed pods contain an incredibly delicious, sweet as candy, white pith. One variety has seeds that must be boiled in order to remove several toxins, which are the added to plantains in a soup. The tree itself is a favorite for fires as well. Inga edulis is widely used in native South American folk medicine. Decoctions of the leaves, bark or root commonly are utilized as treatments for diarrhea, arthritis and rheumatism. Crushed, boiled leaves are ingested to relieve coughing or applied to lip sores, possibly caused by herpes.Several studies have investigated Inga edulis as a source of polyphenols for use as antioxidants and have shown promising results
