Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade on Friday, protesting in support of Serbs in Kosovo amid tensions in the region. Dubbed "People's Rally for the Defense of Kosovo and Metohija", the demonstrators demanded a restoration of all competences and authorities of the Serbian state in Kosovo and Metohija. Speaking during an interview, protester Vasilije Kasanovic, stated "I came to support our brothers in Kosovo and Metohija who are now going through a difficult period. The Kurti regime arrests and terrorises the people who live there." Another protester added "The persecution of the Serbian population is taking place in Kosovo. People are arrested for defending their hearthstone." Serbian Minister of Defence Milos Vucevic announced on Friday that his country has officially submitted a request to the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) to deploy 1,000 police officers in Kosovo and Metohija. Earlier this week, the US State Department’s special envoy Gabriel Escobar stated that Washington “categorically” opposed the return of Serbian police to Kosovo. There have been heightened tensions between Pristina and Belgrade in recent months, with Serbia accusing existing EU and NATO missions of failing to protect ethnic Serbs in Kosovo.

Anfang dieser Woche hatte der Sondergesandte des US-Außenministeriums, Gabriel Escobar, erklärt, Washington lehne die Rückkehr serbischer Polizisten in den Kosovo "kategorisch" ab. Die Spannungen zwischen Pristina und Belgrad haben sich in den letzten Monaten verschärft.
