Bring Back the BOOMBOX! | New Wave Toys M90 Mini & Micro

In this episode, we're going to take you back to the 1980s, when everything was big including the boomboxes. Let's check out the M90 Mini and M90 Micro boomboxes from New Wave Toys.

New Wave Toys have a way of taking you back to a bygone era. Their specialties are, of course, their 1/6 scale arcade cabinets, but they also have other accessories to immerse you in that world. They have quarter machines that double as power banks, a tape deck that does the same, and of course, their beautiful line of scaled-down arcade cabinets. They've recently partnered with Slick Rick and Bua to bring out a special edition of the M90 boombox, in two different sizes.

What separates these versions of the M90 from the standard editions are definitely the color scheme and the livery on it. Both the M90 Mini and M90 Micro feature gold and purple accentuating colors on a black main body of the radio. The M90 Mini also includes magnetic icons that you can attach to the grills, including Slick Rick's signature, iconography, and more. Even powered off, both of these units are really loud!

Starting with the M90 Micro, it comes with the Bluetooth speaker itself, a micro USB power cord, an instruction manual, and a gold chain that you can attach to the unit to where is a necklace. That's right, You can wear this Flava Flav style around your neck. I might have to do that at a future convention and play some game music or something as I walk the floor! Pairing to my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was super easy, and the sound quality was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. It wasn't just loud, it was clear. And in a speaker this small that can be a real challenge.

The M90 Mini has all the exact same features as the M90 Micro, plus a few additional ones. It actually incorporates an AM/FM radio so you can listen to over-the-air broadcasts, there's an SD card slot so you can sideload music and use it as an mp3 player, a wired remote control is included so you can play, pause, and fast forward and rewind, plus those personalization options I mentioned earlier.

Much like the M90 Micro, the M90 Mini has really good sound. I know it's hard for something like that to come through a video since you're hearing it off in the distance through a microphone, but this thing is not only loud but very clear. I never got any kind of crackling or popping at higher volumes, a very good sign. The radio built into it was somewhat unexpected but a really cool touch. I can actually use this as more than just a Bluetooth speaker!

Should you buy one?
I didn't know what to expect when New Wave Toys asked if I wanted to check these out, I was pleasantly surprised with the audio quality on both of these, especially the micro. That sounds better than any right that it has to. For a Bluetooth speaker, they're definitely a novelty, but they also delivered very good audio. I don't know that having slick Rick and Bua on these adds much, it doesn't to me, but I do like the styling of this over their standard M90. If you're looking for something different for a Bluetooth speaker, these are actually really cool.
