The Most Famous Mythical Creature in Every US State, Illustrated: The American Bestiary

A bestiary is a list of creatures from the natural world, including animals, birds, and other creatures. The bestiary first appeared in ancient Greece, but the genre gained more renown in the Middle Ages. It was meant more as an inspirational (and frequently scientifically dubious) compendium than as a textbook.

The bestiary is meant to "improve the minds of common people, in such a way that the soul will at least perceive physically things which it has difficulty grasping mentally: that which they have difficulty understanding with their ears, they will perceive with their eyes," according to one 12th-century author.

In light of this, I decided it was about time to honor America's most beloved mythical creatures with a contemporary illustrated bestiary of fifty completely fictitious, hypothetical monsters that are surely not lurking about your home state waiting to attack. Okay?
