Etsy has recently made a huge change to the way their search function and algorithm works. Up until recently Etsy surprisingly was not factoring in your description to their search algorithm meaning your description had no value in regards to you showing up in searches, they solely looked at your title and tags. Now after this recent change your search engine is going to be factored as well.

Your description serves a couple purposes, first off Google does rank Etsy listings so you always had a change to show up directly in a Google Search. Even outside of SEO your description is a chance to sell customers on your product as well as inform them about things they may want to or need to know about your product, a place to include sizing charts and things like that. Now however it's also going to play a role in you showing up for customers searches.
