Gibraltar 4K Plane Spotting and getting Harassed by the Police, May 24

Plane Spotting at Gibraltar is so cool, but remember it shares a border to the north with Spain. I usually film on both sides, but most of the time on the Spanish side.

I've been filming and photographing planes here for years from all different areas around the airport, and I have never once been approached by the cops. But today was the day!!!!

I was on my last plane before heading home. LGW was lining up on the runway and I could hear the engines being turned up to prepare for departure. Then I heard car door behind me and seconds later the lovely Guardia Civil was there to bother me....Mind you for no reason....And they kept telling me I wasn't and didn't do anything wrong...

So needless to say I was livid when they were like quit recording and let us see your ID. I'm like seriously why do you need my ID have I done anything wrong? Is it illegal to film airplanes????

They kept saying no I didn't do anything wrong, then took my ID and called it in to the station to make sure it was legit, which it was. Anyway, not a fun experience even though most of the time I like cops, well at least I respect their profession.

Long story short, they gave me my ID back and said "sorry to bother you." And that was it. I was so annoyed!

Two things: The airport sits on an international border, and I'm sure that if the border patrol sees the same guy day in a day out they wanna know who it is.
Second: Minutes before they approached me I had filmed the landing of an unidentified private jet that came in out of no where, so maybe it had something to do with that. Needless to say, I hope they don't bother me again, or if they do, they do it when I'm not right in the middle of filming a take off or landing.

I love how these planes land on a tarmac that is surrounded on all sides by water. This is a must watch to see how close to the water these planes land and take off. There are very few airports in the world like this, that could support commercial airline jets to land and take off under such extreme conditions.

Gibraltar is one of the most dangerous airports in the world because the runway is short, it is surrounded by water on both ends of the tarmac, an international highway bisects the tarmac with cars, bikes and people on foot crossing. The weather caused by the Strait of Gibraltar can lead to brutal crosswinds. The pilots who land here have to be very qualified. Flights to Gibraltar are currently only from the United Kingdom because Gibraltar International Airport is technically a military airport not a civilian one.
