The ancient potters in the Southwest used several different ways to create black paint. The way to replicate organic painted black on white pottery has been well established since the 1990s but there are still many unanswered questions about how make mineral painted black on white pottery. In this video I am firing pottery, and one of my main goals here is to do some experiments with different mineral paint recipes fired in a reduction atmosphere in a pit fire. How was reduced iron painted Mimbres pottery made? How was reduced iron and glaze painted Cibola white ware made? Let's get down in the dirt and find out.
