Elon Musk - "Fail More!!"

Elon Musk is a great example of what David Goggins refers to as the uncommon amongst the uncommon. At the age of twelve, Elon created a game using a computer that was lying around the house and sold it for five hundred dollars to an online business. Ever since he was a child, he has been more focused on the fact that the most important problem is to find a solution. He used to say that there is only one problem, and that problem itself is not a problem; rather, the problem is trying to find a solution to the problem. Elon is known for firing those employees from his companies who think that difficult problems cannot be solved. And he consistently hires a team of super productive go-getters who can work 100 hours a week to make impossible things happen.

Elon is currently regarded as the most powerful person in the world. He never received any formal training in rocket science, but after reading and teaching himself through books, he fully understood the subject. Elon believes that failure is irrelevant unless it is catastrophic and the goal must be fulfilled regardless of the method used, or the number of failed attempts. As a child, Elon used to read books alone at home for ten, twelve, and fifteen hours every day. His work ethics are still the same as he puts in fifteen hours of work every day, seven days a week.

Elon has always faced repeated failures. To him, failure is always an option, but he knows how to recover from failure and move on. Elon Musk is a case study unto himself and we all can learn from him the art of failing successfully.

So how did Elon succeed even after the monumental failures he experienced?

First of all, Elon was aware that his objectives were dubious but he kept them straightforward and adhered to them steadily. In order to succeed where almost everyone else has failed, he created better business plans.

In addition to his perseverance and commitment, he surrounds himself with intelligent, gifted individuals who possess the knowledge he lacks and uses books to learn quickly.

Elon's tenacity, unusually high risk acceptance, and unwavering confidence in his capacity to turn ideas into reality are the common threads that he used to bring all his companies to their current levels of success.

The lesson we can learn from Elon’s struggle and success is to keep believing in who we are and what we believe in, and if necessary, to put our money where our mouth is.

Many business leaders fear risk because of its uncertainty and potential to cost time and money. But as Elon put it, a breakthrough in innovation is rarely “one thing.” The “one thing” eventually blossoms into a larger innovation.

Failure is always an option. In fact, Elon believes that “if things are not failing, you are not innovating enough.”

Tesla and SpaceX continue to be works in progress and Elon Musk still has a lot to prove, so it will be interesting to see how he handles the challenges that lie ahead. But there is one thing we can be sure of: He will continue to put in a lot of effort. In an interview, he stated, "Work like hell. I mean, you just have to put in 80 to 100 hour weeks every week. If other people are putting in 40 hour workweeks and you’re putting in 100 hour workweeks, then even if you’re doing the same thing, you know that you will achieve in four months what it takes them a year to achieve."

What do you think?

Will Elon be able to bring a failed company like Twitter the same kind of success as he’s done to Tesla and spacex?
