Searching For The State Bird Of Texas At Night @ Medical Center San Antonio TX #uthealth #nighttime

A short peaceful nighttime flight in the San Antonio Texas Medical Center Area while searching for the Texas State Bird. We found 2 of them nesting at a construction site for a new University Health Research Hospital being built off of Floyd Curl & Wurzbach. The "bird" is of course, the Construction Crane, one of the many factors driving the economy in the State of Texas.

We made this flight around 1:30am in the morning, during the week, so that we wouldn't have to worry as much about overflying people or moving vehicles. We did have to drop altitude once, when we heard a helicopter approaching the area, but it veered off and did not head for one of the many helipads on the various hospitals.

We did receive a brief visit from a very professional and courteous UT Health Police Officer who had spotted our drone in the air (something about downward facing lights & the 3SM strobe on top made it more visible). He followed it back to the vacant parking lot across the street from the construction site and tried to make a stealth approach. His only concern was finding out the purpose of our over flight and whether we had been hired by individuals to scope out the construction side for nefarious purposes. Apparently there had been some recent break-ins and security had been tightened.

We allayed his fears, giving him our business card, and invited him to have his supervisor contact us if they wanted to arrange more footage of this site, or any other site they were responsible for.

This is a major 2 year construction project and it is coming along nicely. This will be the University Health Research Hospital when completed in 2024.
