Take your birdhouse designs to a new level!
Learn how I design and then create birdhouses to make something unique and different from the simple designs you generally see.

I designed and build this birdhouse with art in mind. I started by designing a face for the birdhouse that includes a yellow bird standing on top of a cabin in the mountains. The design is created in a program called Lightburn where I create a file that will transfer the image to a ¼" piece of finished plywood. Once the computer and laser burner are connected I burn the image onto the plywood using a Dewalli laser engraver. This image also included the outlined shape need to be cut into the shape of the birdhouse face. I make those cuts and drill a hole where the design indicates, sand the wood and colorize the birdhouse face. The entire face of the birdhouse has been colorized using alcohol inks. Twigs and other embellishments are also added to the face of the birdhouse to give it depth and character.

From there I build a stick frame work around the face of the birdhouse and then add small limbs from an apple tree. These twigs continue up to the roof line. The base or bottom of the birdhouse is removable for cleaning. The roof is covered with a thin sheet of hammered copper. Once the birdhouse is assembled I add an exterior finish the the birdhouse.

Although the birdhouse is functional it is also a piece of art and will please people who enjoy both birds and art. I suggest that people put them on a cover porch where birds once comfortable with the owners will feel safe.
