Jacksonville, Florida — On April 21, 2022, just before 4 a.m. officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to the 7200 block of Morse Avenue in reference to an armed suspect in the area making threats. Sheriff T.K. Waters, who at the time was JSO’s chief of investigations, said that initially, officers were unable to locate the man. He said officers came back around 11:30 a.m. following another call from neighbors. That’s when, Waters said, officers made contact with 43-year-old Kevin Mahan, who was in a wooded area. Body cam footage shows an officer, gun drawn, repeatedly yell for Mahan to drop the ax, as was originally explained by Waters. The video shows Mahan standing with the ax next to his head. The officer fires one shot, striking Mahan and killing him. No officers were injured.
