Too much for train tickets.

In the United States, trains are frequently more expensive than flights and more expensive than intercity train systems in other industrialized nations, where trains are frequently even faster and the service is superior. However, Amtrak, the federally sponsored company that operates a large number of passenger trains in America, has never turned a profit. In fact, the company's backlog of repairs totals $42 billion, and in 2021, ticket sales weren't even enough to cover half of its costs. The Northeast Corridor, where tickets are extremely expensive, is where most of that revenue is generated. Following a pandemic-induced all-time low in ridership, Amtrak now aims to increase service in a comprehensive 15-year plan with $66 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
