Why dress so formally when business attire is more casual nowadays?

Paul asked an interesting question on the topic of business attire and what’s appropriate to wear in times when people are generally becoming more relaxed in their dress sense.

Rightly or wrongly, my approach is to “dress for success” but for many reasons that are personal to me, rather than what’s acceptable to society.
