Light versus Darkness

Darkness is described as the absence of light. It rarely has a positive affect. It hides things, it provokes fear, people get lost in the dark, there are no colors, it shutters activity, it prevents growth and vitality, its cold.

Light, however, has many positive attributes. It reflects, it reveals, it penetrates darkness, it brightens, it radiates, it brings color, it fosters life and growth, it promotes activity, it draws living beings to it.

After creating the heavens and the earth, the first act we see God perform in the bible was create light and separate it from the darkness. God is the Father of Heavenly Lights as we read in James 1:17. And we find in scripture that light is a major attribute of God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and the Word.

• I John 1:5 - God is light, in him there is no darkness at all.

• Daniel 2:22 - God’s light reveals the hidden things and light dwells with Him.

• Psalm 119:105 & 130 – His word is a lamp for our feet. The unfolding of His word gives light.

• John 1:4-5 – Jesus is the light of men and darkness cannot overcome that light.

• Hebrews 1:3 - Jesus is the radiance of God’s Glory.

• Acts 2:3-4 - The Holy Spirit came upon the people like tongues of fire.

• 1 Timothy 6:16 - God dwells in the light.

• Isaiah 60:3 - Nations and kings will come to His Light.

When we apply the qualities of light to God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and the Word, we have a greater concept of their power and character. Let us keep that in mind as I repeat those attributes of light again: Reflects, reveals, penetrates darkness, brightens, radiates, brings color, fosters life and growth, promotes activity, draws others in.

Light is powerful. We can see why darkness can never have the victory. So let us flee from the darkness and its negative qualities. As Ephesians 5:8 tells us, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”

As God’s children, his children of light, let us focus on the light, be drawn to the light and be illuminated by the light.
