How Fast Can Snakes Move?
If you have ever wondered How fast can a snake move? and if you can outrun a snake?
Here is the answer to your question! In this video we speak about the behaviour of a snake and how could one possibly avoid an attack from a snake!
This video contains information on how to avoid snake bite / how to avoid attack from snakes, We discuss how fast does a snake move ( snake speed ) and how fast does snakes strike ( snake striking speed ) and wether you could outrun a run? moreover should you run away from a snake?
This video covers the subject of what to do when you see a snake?
An incredible number of people worldwide suffer from specific phobias but snakes are among the most feared.
While there are few who are not only comfortable around snakes but also enjoys their company whereas among the rest
Almost half of the population feel anxious about snakes.
Infact the thought of being chased by a snake is shared among millions worldwide.
While many people simply cannot tell the difference between venomous and non-venomous, the fear is also very common in places where there are no venomous species.
Nevertheless if one happens to encounter a snake in the wild, how fast can they move and would it be easy to outrun it?
Moreover should you run or freeze?
These are the two most common reactions on an encounter with a snake - flight or freeze.
And ofcourse there are some that try to fight, needless to say that's a terrible idea.
Snakes are shy reptiles and wants nothing to do with us humans. They will not attack unless provoked, so they prefer to slither away rather than attack or bite people.
If a snake happens to be very close to you, running away would be a bad idea not because you can't.
An average snake moves at a speed of between just 1 to 3 MPH, whereas the very fastest snake, the Black Mamba, can slither at about 12 MPH, and a truly scared human (even one with short legs) could probably exceed that.
The speed at which a snake moves is not a problem and one can easily outrun it however the real concern lies at their striking speed as they can be deadly fast.
The average speed in which a snake strikes has been recorded at 1/24th of a second, That's faster than the blink of an eye.
When striking they can reach speeds approaching 3 metres per second.
Hence when you find yourself within striking zone of a snake, running would be a bad idea.
The last thing you want to do is to startle the snake as they use striking as a defence mechanism and If you run, the snake may interpret the sudden movement as a threat and attack.
Thus, the smartest thing to do is to slowly start backing away from the snake without making any sudden or jerky movements.
aim for at least 10 steps away, to ensure safety no matter which direction the snake moves.
Other than situations where people try to kill a snake they encountered, most snake bites occur because the snake got scared. For example, many bites occur when people accidentally step on a snake or if they accidentally grabbed a snake while gathering firewood.
The Hissing, huffing, rattling, and coiling, are all warning signs that you are too close.”
However for instance where you have literally stepped on a snake or right next to it, you aren’t going to stand still right on top of it. Move away quickly. If you have trekking poles, keep them in between you and the snake — the snake might strike at the poles instead of you.
Now this is worst case scenario, We don't go around stepping on snakes.
Infact Snakes are actually more scared of humans than we are of them
And they will go out of their way to avoid humans.
Snakes can detect infrared radiation from warm bodies to get an idea of the size and shape.
Humans as compare to snake have a large body so the heat signature by the human body is massive and they fear human or any other large mammals
Although they still may attack humans but only in case of self defense out of fear.
