It was pretty neat to see the guy had a drone up in the air - I wonder whether he also was able to film them from the aspect of the drone, who the eyewitness mentioned was flying at around 300ft.

I think this is actually migratory birds, and because of the white I imagine they are likely egrets. According to google, Egrets can fly up to 500 miles in one day and are usually crusing around an altitude of 6 to 7 thousand feet but often as high as 13, 000ft as they migrate through the Rocky Mountains. Around fall, most cranes fly slower than in spring because they need to accommodate for their young.
