Africa's Life of Elephants, a 2017 National Geographic HD documentary. Vast savannahs, seemingly endless deserts, and impenetrable rain forests are scattered across this continent. From elusive leopards to the delicate bongo, which resembles a gazelle, each region is home to its own distinct species of wild animal.
The largest land mammal in the world, an adult male savannah elephant weighs approximately 12,000 pounds and stands approximately 10 feet tall at the shoulder. Maximum weight for the smaller forest elephant is 10,000 pounds. Additionally, unlike the curved tusks of savannah elephants, forest dwellers' tusks are small and straight, intended for navigating dense foliage. The tough hide of both elephants is the same (the Latin word for elephant is "pachyderm," which means "thick-skinned"). However, despite the durability of their skin, elephants still require protection from insects and the scorching African sun. An elephant cools down and gets a second layer of cover by wading in a mud bath.
