Eric Wahl, the brother of sportswriter Grant Wahl who died in Qatar while covering the World Cup, is asking for help. Grant was detained in Qatar for wearing a rainbow shirt two weeks ago Crazy, Wahl was just live-tweeting the Argentina-Netherlands game earlier. Not gonna speculate on the exact cause, but he did say on a podcast yesterday that he had been dealing with bronchitis and had visited the onsite medical clinic twice this week.

Wahl’s wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, also confirmed the death in a post on Twitter. A family friend said that Gounder asked for privacy, and would leave all public comment to the U.S. Embassy in Qatar and the United States Soccer Federation.

Grant Wahl (December 8, 1974 – December 10, 2022)[1] was an American sports journalist and soccer analyst for CBS Sports, who was best known for having been a senior writer for Sports Illustrated and a correspondent for Fox Sports. He was also the author of the book The Beckham Experiment (2009).[2]

His Sports Illustrated career mainly focused on college basketball and soccer in the United States. Wahl ran for the FIFA presidency in 2011, but withdrew his campaign after failing to receive an endorsement from a football association. He left Sports Illustrated in 2020 and founded his own Substack newsletter. Wahl died while covering the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he had been arrested for wearing a shirt with a rainbow and had also been investigating migrant labor mistreatment in the country

Wahl established his own independent newsletter on Substack, named Fútbol with Grant Wahl for his existing podcast, in August 2021.[8][22] He also released a podcast series on the career of Freddy Adu in 2020 that was distributed by Blue Wire Media.[23][24] While following the United States to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Wahl became caught up in a crackdown in Qatar on items that featured a rainbow. Wahl was arrested inside a stadium over the t-shirt he was wearing (which happened to have the offending image displayed), while a reporter for The New York Times who attempted to report on the incident also became caught up in the crackdown and was also arrested by Qatari officials.[25][26]
