On Parliament Hill, leaders of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) hold a news conference to discuss Bill C-29, the federal government’s legislation to create a National Council for Reconciliation. The CAP is raising concerns that the proposed council would exclude off-reserve, non-status and urban Indigenous peoples. Speaking with reporters are CAP National Chief Elmer St. Pierre and Vice-Chief Kim Beaudin. They are calling for the bill to be amended to guarantee CAP a seat on the council like their national Indigenous organization counterparts. (December 9, 2022)
