Flightless Injured Wasp

Found another wasp who needs rehab. Sanctuary, actually. She'll never fly again because one of her wings is damaged, likely by freezing nighttime temperatures. It's funny how they find me. I was outside caring for the other animals, and she crawled onto the feed bucket or pan. As I was picking her up to just set her aside out of danger, I noticed her damaged wing. I've rehabbed some of them, and honeybees and other insects before, and released them. Sometimes they can't be fixed, and I just care for them. I've had wasps before who lived for many months, and one who lived almost a year. Most people don't know that wasps are pollinators too, and you shouldn't kill them just because they're there. It's misunderstood that they prey on and eat only insects. The adults mostly prey on other insects to take back to the nest and feed their larvae, but the adult wasp actually prefers fruits or drinks nectar, like other pollinators.

For years I have been able to handle wasps barehanded without being stung. It's surprising how little you will be stung if you aren't threatening toward them. I even recently relocated 2 wasp nests filled with wasps, that had made their nests on movable objects. I just did so slowly and quietly and didn't swat at them. No problems with them whatsoever. That's not to say they won't sting you if you inadvertently get too close and are making big movements or a lot of noise. But if you're aware they are there, and not trying to menace them you can walk right by them and not have any problems. Especially this time of year. They're just hoping to shelter some place to survive freezing weather and make it until Spring. Most of them won't live through winter though unless they are under cover or inside a shed, barn, etc.
